Bodywork, treatments, coatings and finishes

As noted elsewhere in this presentation, the donor Jensen Interceptor lived its life in Tucson, Arizona, hence, was almost completely rust free. One small rust spot under the driver’s heel location, and one on the left door frame upright were cut out and repaired.

The entire underside of the car and the engine compartment were covered from the Jensen factory with thick layers of undercoat.

Heavy undercoat covered the underside and engine compartment of the Jensen Interceptor as delivered.

Following mechanical disassembly of the vehicle, all this undercoat was manually removed using an induction heater and hand scrapers. No open flame was used.

Following removal of the undercoating, the Jensen Interceptor was mounted in a rotisserie fixture, loaded on a trailer, and transported for sandblasting of the frame and interior. The body itself was not sandblasted, to avoid possible deformation of the panels.

After sandblasting the exposed surfaces were primed.

After priming, the underside and interior of the vehicle, including the interior roof, were coated to specified total thickness with multiple layers of Lizard Skin Heat Protection and Sound Control coating.  This procedure both quiets the car and provides a thermal barrier which insulates the interior.

Upon completion of the coating process, the body was transported to Treadway Restoration in Columbia Falls, MT for completion of bodywork and painting with two-part (basecoat/clearcoat) paint. Color is Lamborghini Champagne Grigio which is Carquest code 300855.

Body Modifications and Details

Some details of the body have been modified. The side marker lights have been removed and filled. The fuel filler door has been welded shut, since the fuel filler has been moved to behind the rear license plate. The jacking point covers have been removed from the lower body trim pieces and welded solid in stainless steel, and these pieces have been painted body color. The front Lucas turn signal lights have been removed and small LED lights have been sunk into the body. Largely, however, the Jensen body remains stock.

The hatchback and hood supports have been converted from springs to gas-charged cylinders.

The mirrors are new 1971 Dodge reproductions. These are correct as fitted to the original car by the selling dealer.

All badging is new.

Bumpers are modified to eliminate overriders, and were then rechromed by Decorative Industrial Plating in Helena, MT.
