The Hemiceptor transmission is a five speed, electronically controlled Chrysler transmission referred to as the NAG-1 722.6.
This transmission was actually a Mercedes design, and was “given” to Chrysler during the period when Mercedes had ownership interest in Chrysler. The transmission in the Jensen Hemiceptor is a remanufactured and significantly upgraded NAG-1 from Southern Hot Rods which is capable of reliably handling up to 800 hp. Fifth gear in this transmission is a .83 overdrive. The torque converter is a lock-up type, with lock-up speed programmable through the transmission controller.
The electronic controller of the transmission is a PCS-2000 made by Powertrain Control Solutions. The PCS-2000 features dual calibrations (sport mode, tow-haul mode, etc.), programmable shift points, shift firmness, and torque converter lockup.
The PCS-2000 transmission controller is located in the console between the seats, and programming is accessed by a Calport in the glove box area. The software for the PCS-2000 is installed on the furnished laptop computer.
The PCS-2000 controller was not specifically produced by PCS for the NAG-1 transmission. However, Russell Drake of Sound German Automotive has adapted the controller to this transmission and furnished the controller and wiring, along with the base controller shifting profile . Mr. Drake has provided fabulous consultation and support and is available to remotely tune the transmission to the preferences of the new owner.
Speed inputs for the transmission controller are read from signals produced by magnets installed in the transmission output/driveshaft coupler.
The transmission shifter is a new Mercedes unit. The S/W switch is not currently enabled but could could easily be configured to switch between the two program modes stored in the PCS-2000. Note that Powertrain Control Solutions offers a steering wheel mounted paddle shifter to allow thumb control of the transmission. PCS also offers a data logger which would allow precise programming of shift points, a valuable asset for race track applications.
As delivered, the PCS-2000 controller contains basic configurations, as furnished by Russell Drake. The ultimate owner of this vehicle is encouraged to contact Mr. Drake for configurations specific to their needs (or their chosen racetrack). The PCS control software is installed on the included laptop, and transmission calibration connection ports are located in the glovebox of the Hemiceptor.
A transmission cooler is mounted ahead of the radiator. This cooler transfers fluid from the transmission via modified Chrysler lines which include a Chrysler thermostat.
The NAG-1 transmission does not from the factory accept a fluid level dipstick. The stock configuration requires a visit to your friendly local Chrysler dealership to check the fluid level. We have modified this arrangement and a dipstick is currently furnished, along with an adaptor to allow replenishment of transmission fluid.
The transmission fluid currently installed is the specified Chrysler ATF fluid. A spare quart of this fluid is included in the tool bag.
